STRUCTURAL SAFETY ASSESSMENT IN MEMBRANE-TYPE CCS IN LNGC UNDER ICEBERG COLLISIONS

SUMMARY :
The exploitation of the giant natural gas fields in the Western Arctic regions of Russia has precipitated the development of Arctic LNG shipping. This has led to demands for more secure designs of Arctic LNG carriers, and especially the structural safety of the Arctic LNG CCS under the impact of collision with icebergs. To ensure a reasonable and reliable safety assessment of CCS, its criteria should be established with consideration of the shock failure characteristics of its components under impact loadings from iceberg collisions, and accurate and correct predictions of impact loadings should be also made on the inner hull under iceberg collision. In this study, a full-scale iceberg-ship collision analysis technique and an associated iceberg modelling technique were developed. The former considers the surrounding seawater, and the latter makes a careful examination of the characteristics of the crushing strength of icebergs following collision with ships using LS-DYNA code. A local zooming analysis technique was also developed for the structural safety assessment of MARK III membrane-type CCS, and as a preliminary step the failure characteristics of the mastic component was applied to the local zooming analysis.
